Christmas in July--3

Medieval, vikings, historicals in general. Plenty of folks seem to like the age-old historical genre.

Until recently, word was, historicals were on the downhill slide, maybe even on the way out. Many publishers even did away with their Regency lines.

What does everyone think, were historicals in a slump? Did you quit reading them, if so why? If you think they weren't in a slump, why were agents and editors saying they weren't buying?

I have been seeing more and more of paranormals and vamp books out. But historicals are my first love.

I'm not sure if historicals were in a slump, but I did notice that they weren't as plentiful. The rising popularity of paranormals and urban fantasy probably had an effect. I hear a lot of people saying that historicals are back and I'm happy. Even Julie Garwood released her first historical in over 10 years.

Hmmm, rumors tend to be that. Rumors. I cut my teeth on historicals. Give me medieval Scotland or give me death! The same with Vikings. That's why I write my Time Guardian series. I couldn't decide about when to write. So, I set up a story world that allowed me to write about whenever I wanted. Of course, I can still talk about planets far far away...

I have to agree with Kimmy and Jane. I think it is the rise in paranormals. They seem to be the "in thing" right now. Personally, historicals are and will always be my favorites. You always remember your first love, right? That would be mine where reading is concerned.

I read several genres and historical fiction is one of my favorites! Maybe, these so-called excerpts who think that, are looking for something that doesn't exist, yet. I don't care for paranormal books as much as factual historicals. Thanks, Cindi

I agree that the rise in the number of paranormals has caused fewer historicals to be printed.

You all may very well be correct. It makes a lot of sense that one genre would give suffer because of another. As a writer, I would combat this by writing paranormal historicals. What would everyone think of that?

I love Historicals and although other genres are hotter right now, mainly Paranormals I think and hope that they will be back in style again. It is like a tv show or movie if someone is making a super hero movie then there will be a ton of them. I have read several paranormal historicals and liked them so it would be great if you did too Terah.
