I've read some absolutely wonderful work by aspiring authors. On the other hand, I've read some stuff that just boggles my brain.

One gentleman I met when asked to attend a local memoirs writers group asked me to read his story. I cautiously asked how long the manuscript was. "One hundred pages," he replied. I had liked the sound of his story, so agreed, but specified that I might be a while in getting to it. He sent me the ms. It was single spaced, double sided! That's a four hundred page manuscript! For those who may not write, we format our manuscripts at 25 pt paragraph spacing (that's more than double space,) single sided. So a four hundred page manuscript is about 100 pages single spaced doubled sided--that's a full length novel.

Needless to say, the thought of reading his manuscript was daunting. Then, I took a look at it. It was a real shame he couldn't write the darned thing the way he described it to me. It was a real mess. What makes the whole thing funny was that he later emailed asking me to send the ms back to him!

Another very memorable experience comes to mind. While judging a contest, I once got a manuscript that was on onion paper--that's a real no no--the page numbers at top had been crossed out and corrected in pencil, that text was crooked on the paper and, here's the best--well, almost the best--there were no almost paragraph breaks. Each page was filled with one OR two long paragraphs. Add to that the fact there were no commas, and no quotes to indicate dialogue, that puppy was one tough chapter to read.

Comment on Second week of August winner

Woohoo, thank you, email on it's way. :)

Dina

Comment on Third week of August giveaway

Oh, this sounds lovely and sweet.

Comment on Third week of August giveaway

if we did have a garden I would hope it would know what is best but only we know our hearts

Comment on Third week of August giveaway

I would hope she would follow her own heart and be with the man she loves
